OYSTER BBQ WRAP-UP

What: Something we haven't done in ages as a group (we did this a lot in the early 90's) - a club brew-in on a (hopefully) warm Saturday afternoon. We'll be making 2 10-gallon batches of some kind of ales, half of which we'll serve at the State Comp at Stern Grove, the balance at the Xmas Party.

When: Saturday, August 16 or 23, probably 10-11 AM. We'll post the actual date & time on our website when we finalize it. If you still live in the dark ages (NIK!!) don't have a computer/internet access, call an officer in late July.

Where: Joe & Rik's, 2631 Noreiga (btwn 33rd & 34th Aves), SF. 415/681-5901 for direxions. Muni 71 stops within a block or 2.

Bring: Food (grillables & munchables) & brew to share, plus a drinking vessel. El Presidente may call you if he needs some brewing equipment; your Editor will be grilling sausages & whatever else shows up - we hope Webmeister Jay can make it & bring his wonderful drumettes/wings (hint, hint!!).

For you newer menbers, this is a chance to get some "hands-on" involvement in the all-grain process. For the "vets", if you want to suggest a recipe, talk to El Presi-dente - I think he's open to suggestions. Once the brews complete fermentation, we'll rack them into 5-gallon cornelius kegs to cask-condition for 6-8 weeks before we serve them at Stern Grove, another 3-4 weeks before the Xmas party.

This is a great way to spend an afternoon - if the weather cooperates, it'll be even better!!

For whatever reasons, most likely the threat of rain, we had an unusually small turnout at this year's event - so those who attended couldn't kill off the 2500 oysters we supplied - many got to take some home to enjoy the next day or 2. Unfortunately, the 3:30 wind & rain killed the party early - most left by 4. Eric & I got home before 7 - we were the last to leave after picking up all the lost & found items.

Speaking of which - I have a covered Tupperware/Rub-bermaid cake dish, a few wooden/plastic utensils, plus a golden harvest drinking jar that nobody claimed when I sent an e-mail to all the Malts I have e-mail addresses for. Call/E-mail your Editor to claim & pass the word to your guests, please! Otherwise, they get 86'd, or become part of the Malts' collection.

For once, we had an ample beer supply - thanks to all who contributed - & thanks to Jack Dawson's friend Dave, I have some photos which I hope print well in B & W - they're on page 3. We haven't had rain since theBBQ at Speedway Meadows 10+ years ago, so we really can't complain - San Pedro Park is a great site for this event.

May the weather & the turnout be better next year!

Back to small typeface - I have a lot to cram in here, as Oyster BBQ pics will take up most of Page 3. Thanx to all who braved the wind & overcast to make the oyster BBQ - KUDOS to all for a fine array of side dishes & desserts! KABONG to Mother Nature for sending everyone home early!

I'm a free bird as of July 1 (as in RETIRED!), so I'll have more time to beef up future issues when I'm not traveling. The fat buyout I got will kick my 2003 income into a higher tax bracket, so no way am I working for wages for 6 months. Next year, I want to substitute teach or tend bar in a brewpub part time, I need to get a few more SS quarters to be able to draw that at age 62, but I don't want to be tied down. Upcoming travels will take me to Fresno/Hinkley/LA area July 1-7, Oregon & Washington in late August (w/my mom, whose sibs live in Snohomish & Anacortes; a favorite nice lives in Portland), & back to DC, Virginia Beach, & Myrtle Beach in October. Will also try to get a few days in San Diego. That should give me plenty of column material for future issues.

El Presidente has no column, but there's a blurb on Page 3 about proposed rule changes for the State Comp - contact him if you wish to comment. A couple weeks ago, I sent an e-mail to many of the Malts & some other brewers I know regarding "Beer Darwins" - I've decided to call them "Stupid Beer Tricks" instead - here's #1 (contributions gratefully accepted - I hope to get enough to make this a semi-regular feature): I'm sitting at the bar at Pyramid one recent Friday night having dinner & the Brewer's Handle Double IPA (8.9% ABV & pretty damned good), when a "yup-coup[le]" sit down alongside me. He asks the barkeep for a sample of the DIPA, then proceeds to order a pitcher of same to share with his SO. A few minutes later, they ask the barkeep for some LEMON!! I was tempted to play beer police with them, but restrained myself. After they left (they did kill the whole pircher), the barkeep & I had a few laughs about their beer "murder".

Beer notes: Pyramid again has changed their menu - no separate lunch & dinner menus, no more steak, & the "classic combo" pizza has morphed into a sausage, pepperoni, & mushroom combo. Loox like the corporate beancounters are at it again! Got to Blue Frog in Fairfield - believe it or not, Marie Callender's has a piece of it - the charge receipt I got had MC's name on top. Beer was average, food on the pricey side - burger I had was supposedly of filet mignon, but a tad on the dry side ... I'll go back to check out the ribs & other stuff - the menu looked interesting enough, but I was in the mood for a burger. I do applaud their server for swapping out the cole slaw for me for something much better (I rarely eat restaurant slaw, as it usually is drowning in mayo, which I hate).

Peace & Good Brewing! - MJK

(there may be a few more tidbits on page 3 after I fill in the pix)
