AUGUST MEETING # 1

The Friday night party last month was fun. I'm not sure where my priorities were, but I had to bake bread for a dinner party the next night and didn't get to Joe's and Rick's till pretty late. Still, there were a bunch of revelers and plenty of good beer. Alec had made a delicious English-style ale which was on the handpump.

A couple years ago I heard that Trader Joe's was dumping liter-and-a-half bottles of Hair of the Dog "Adam" for four bucks, so I went down there and bought several. After I got them home I realized I was never going to open up a liter and a half of barley wine and hope to drink it, so I didn't know what to do. People said take it to a party, but that also seems like a waste, because there are so many people at a party that wouldn't understand or appreciate such an odd beer.

But the Friday party was perfect for that. I brought one and it lasted a pretty long time. That's because it's a ten-percent beer.

The Party seemed like a success so perhaps we'll have more. I think the next available month is September or October. I talked to the guys at Speakeasy about having a Friday night party at the brewery, and they liked the idea. And what could be better than partying in a brewery?

By the time you read this, I'll be on my way to the Great British Beer Festival in London. There will be 350 draft real ales, a hundred ciders, and a few hundred different European and American beers. Beer heaven. The August meeting will be at my house in San Francisco three nights after I return from Lon-don. This would be a good meeting to attend if you're at all interested in English real ales.

Directions: 250 San Leandro Way, in the southwest corner of SF. 415/759-6768. From north of there: Drive down 19th Ave through the alphabetic cross-streets and turn left on Sloat. Go straight at the next lights onto St. Francis Blvd. The third right is San Leandro (the second right is San Fernando; don't con-fuse them). A block and a half down on the right is my house, exactly mid-block. (concludes over yonder)

PARTY TIME AGAIN!!!

(aka 2nd August meeting)

When: SATURDAY, AUGUST 18, 2PM - ????

Where: Ed Chainey's, 5866 McBryde, Richmond, 510/237-5704.

What: Another social event - what we do best. Harvest some hops, perhaps, as well.

Bring: Brew to share, food to grill/side munchies, a drinking vessel - the club will furnish plates, napkins, & a limited amount of plastic ware.

Direxions: From the west, I-80 East to Solano/McBryde Exit. L @ Stop sign to Mc Bryde, R on McBryde up the hill - house is on the right about 1/4 mile past Arlington. Call Ed if you're coming west on 80. From Marin, your best bet is to take 580 across the SR Bridge to Bayview/Carlson, L at stop onto Bayview, R on Carlson, L on 80 E & proceed as above. OK to park directly in front of his house or at the rec center below.

From northeast: Drive up Market to Twin Peaks and down Portola till it becomes Junipero Serra at the intersection with Sloat. Turn left at the next lights, which is Ocean. The first left is a stop light, and the second left is a stop sign. That's San Leandro. 250 is a block and a half down on the left, exactly mid-block.

From south: Drive up 280 to 19th or Junipero Serra. Turn right on Ocean, and left on San Leandro.

From the Bay Bridge: Take 80 to 280 to the Ocean Avenue exit and turn right. Follow Ocean a couple miles until two blocks before Junipero Serra and turn right on San Leandro. Give me grief about being so vague.

Forgive any sloppiness - this one's being cranked out in a big fat hurry. KUDOS to Joe & Rick for hosting a fine party last month, including tastes of the 2 Anchor whiskeys for the brave. Damn, are they strong (but good!). Further KUDOS to Joe for schlepping all those British beers back from his recent trip across the pond (tasting notes on Page 3), & a big KABONG to his former employers for pink-slipping him while he was away.

I spent the last 2 weeks of June in the DC area - unfortunately, there weren't any brewpubs close to where I was staying, but I did manage to get hold of SNPA for only slightly more than I'm used to paying here, & some of the bars & restaurants I visited had it on tap. But the overall brewpub scene there can't compare to what we have here.

We're making up for July with 2 August meetings - a weeknighter at El Presi-dente's & a weekender at Ed Chainey's - see page 1 for the details. We need someone to step up & fill the void for September ... Eric & I may host another outdoor meeting in late October or after the State Comp ... even perhaps the Xmas Party - if the weather's good, we have lots of space outside; but if Mother Nature decides to get nasty, we're kind of cramped indoors.

Czech beers all of a sudden seem to be the rage - new ones keep popping up at BevMo all the time, & Ed tells me that Czechwar is selling very well - the distributor he's working for can't keep it in stock. Reviews welcome - I found the Czechwar to be extremely good, but expensive ($7.99/6 + CRV at BevMo Oakland); the BarrandoV I tried recently ($4.99/6 + CRV at BevMo Albany) wasn't bad, either. Perhaps we can do a Czech taste-off sometime in the future? Would Mr. Cihak be willing to host such a meeting??

I'll close with one of the better beer joke's I've seen heard in awhile: At a British brew fest, 4 reps decide to go to a local pub for a couple of brews after the session ends. The first tells the publican "I'd like a Corona", & the barmaid reaches up. retrieves a dusty bottle from the back-bar shelf, & pours. The next guy says, "I'll have the best beer in the world - give me a Budweiser" - she fetches him a can from the cooler. The 3rd says, "I only drink beer made with Rocky Mountain spring water - a Coors, please!" She duly retrieves one for him. The 4th guy, who happens to be the Guinness rep, orders a coke, & the other 3 jump all over him, screaming - "I thought you said we were going out for a beer or two!!" His reply: "We were, but since you chaps aren't drinking beer, I'm not, either!"
