SORTA BREW HUMOR COURTESY OF KELLY DUNHAM

The Boston Symphony Orchestra was performing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. In the piece, there's a long passage, about 20 minutes, during which the bass violinists have nothing to do. Rather than sit around that whole time looking stupid, some bass-ists decided to sneak offstage and go to the tavern next door for a drink. After slamming several beers in quick succession, one of them looked at his watch. "Hey! We need to get back!" he cried.

"No need to panic," said a fellow bassist. "I thought we might need some extra time, so I tied the last few pages of the conduc-tor's score together with string. It'll take him a few minutes to get it untangled."

A few moments later, the drunk musicians staggered back into the concert hall and took their places.

NEWSFLASH - POTRERO BREWING CLOSES!

Marc & Lois Martin informed us at the Oyster BBQ that Potrero Brewing closed on April 27-28, the result of a partnership "divorce". Fortunately for us, they were able to bring some of the last brew being served down to Pa-cifica with them & share. According to the Martins, the closure may not be permanent - I'm sure a lot of the SOMA & Potrero Hill denizens are hoping the same thing. We'll keep you posted.

Damn! I wish I had an on-call stand-in for this column, as El Presidente has for his! Now if I can get columns from both of them for the same Prost ...

Another fine day in Pacifica, a great array of brews to sample, & a lot of "old faces" showed up! This was by 9 miles the easiest Oyster BBQ I've worked since we've been invading San Pedro Park! KUDOS to Joe & Rik for getting the oysters there before the major crowd arrived - KUDOS to them for being so cooperative. Further KUDOS to Chuck the Czech for getting the grills going & for his very popular pesto sauce, which was history by 3:00. And final KUDOS to the late-stayers who did the final cleanup!

Hope Potrero's closing isn't an omen. What grates me more, though, is that 20-Tank's site STILL REMAINS EMPTY!! I hope the greedy SOB(s) who evicted them are driving clunkers & eating cat food! Speaking of brewpubs, if anyone is interested in checking out Eldo's (the recently opened brewpub on 9th Ave) sometime, give me a call/e-mail me & I'll hop BART & the N & meet you there - parking's a royal pain in that neighborhood. Also on the brewpub front, Pyramid just opened its Walnut Creek location at the former Faultline Site on North Main. The word is that the brewer will be making small batches of specialty beers to go along with the regular line that's brewed in Berkeley. If you're interested, check out Pyramid's website.

Has Bison bit the dust? Andy Ericson & I tried to go there for dinner the day after the oyster BBQ & the place was closed & dark. So I drove a little farther south to one of my favorite Oakland spots, Barclay's on College, where we had some excellent popcorn shrimp burgers, plus a few pints of good micros from their wide selection. Barclay's has a new spot opposite Yoshi's near Jack London Square, which I hope to hit for lunch soon - when I do, I'll wrote about it ... in the meantime, flip over to page 3 for my review of a place that Pat Loughran raves about & one of the best happy hour bargains in SF!

Peace & Good Brewing!!

LA DAMA PRIMERA

KENNEDY'S PUB & CURRY HOUSE

A few days ago, a friend & I had tickets to see the Super Furry Animals at Bimbo's (they were uninspiring, the opening act, Kid 606, was the worst ever - 1/2 hour of some clown twisting dials & assaulting the ears with all sorts of musically zilcho electronic noise). We decided to meet for dinner at Kennedy's, which came highly recommended . We were not disappointed.

This is a funky place owned by an Indian who was a big JFK fan, hence the name & the menu. The pub is an assortment of rooms & a patio, some for dining, others for drinking &/or shooting pool & playing video games. Oddly, there's only 1 TV, in the bar area.

Beer is a bargain - $3-3.25/pint for a good selection of imports & micros - and a better bargain between 4-8 PM Mon-Fri, when everything on tap is a buck off. Beamish Irish Stout (not bad!) is $2/pint all the time. For the swill fans, Pabst is $5/pitcher during happy hour. They also have an interesting assortment of bottled micros & a few of the common Belgians.

The menu is Indian, with a couple of American bar munchie type appetizers. We split some excellent potato-stuffed samosas, some whole wheat flatbread (nan), a spicy lamb dish, & a less-spicy but tasty shrimp & spinach dish - with tip, the food tab was $36. Decent portions & plenty of long-grain white rice with which to mop up the sauces. Any time I go to Bimbo's, that's definitely where I'll be eating & having a few pints beforehand!

Kennedy's is on lower Columbus at Taylor (where the cable car turns), & keeps late hours - you can get food until 1 AM, which is great for the late-night munchies. If you're into playing pool, the tables are free on Wednesdays - but beware of "hustlers" at the table in the bar area. On-street parking can be tough, though I parked in a metered spot a block away at 5:45. Most of the surrounding residential areas have a 2-hour limit until 8 PM for cars sans the proper sticker. MUNI seems the best bet, as the 30 bus & the Powell St cable car go right by it. Bike/motorbike also would work, as would a short walk up from the Wharf/Cannery.

The Beer Widow Stands By Her Man

at the Boonville Beer Festival.

We paid for our tickets - grabbed our event glasses (augh, more beer glasses!) and joined the crowd around the green. We moved from one stand to the next, one brewery to the next following the enthusiastic crowd who I can say seemed to fall into two groups:

1) Young single males sipping and eyeing young single blondes in skimpy tops; and

2) older not so single males also sipping and eyeing the young single blondes in skimpy tops (to be fair, 1/2 blonde 1/2 dark haired) ... For the most part I kept my event beer glass (6 ounces) in my purse because if I tried to keep up with my husband glass for glass or even one to two I would end up needing an afternoon nap or else I would be tipsy, irritable, grumpy, sleepy (or one of the other Dwarfs). I'm glad to report that I managed to not lose my husband even though flip flops were not a wise choice of foot wear for two reasons 1) men in beer events follow 1/2 inch behind you and so step on your flip flops causing you to fly forward and 2) men cutting across your front step on your toes... aaugh!!.

But I did enjoy my few beers, welcome on a very sunny afternoon. With our special guest "blue" banded wrists we further enjoyed an evening of more free beer, roasted pig (Hawaii style) and camping with nature. As we stood around the traditional event bonfire chatting with friends we have not seen for many months, a group of people started throwing Frisbees across the fire. Unbeknownst to the beer widow [who was] chatting with another beer widow, a wild Frisbee zoomed towards my face. As I raised my hand to take a sip of red wine, the crazy Frisbee shattered the wine glass (not to worry as it was plastic), spraying wine on my face, jacket, sweater ... I felt like Carrie. This not so tragic ending could have been avoided (no gloating please) if a wise beer widow had instead been:

1) Paying attention

2) Drinking beer from strong unbreakable beer glass ...

Lesson learned.
